Self Defence

traditional karate at its best

Enrolling with Northern Lakes Martial Arts is a benefit for not only your self defense, but also flexibility, agility, discipline and respect.

A last resort Self-defence is taught in our classes at a degree appropriate for the age.

Our little kids are taught self-defence awareness and how to make noise to draw attention to what is happening. They are taught how to make themselves a difficult target to pick up or drag away. As they grow a little older and stronger they are introduced to escapes from wrist/arm grabs, headlocks and bear hugs. They are also taught simple effective defence to unprovoked punches to the head (cowards punch).

Late teens and early adults are taught methods of survival in common scenarios of violent attack. Escape methods are focussed on rather than a duel with an opponent that often results in injury or worse. Adults become engaged in survival methods in common scenarios that utilize a shock and shatter approach only after an attempt to de-escalate the situation

With a selection of classes from young kids to adults, Shotokan has a proven history of self improvement.

Shihan Jeff

Our Chief Instructor is Shihan Jeff McCauley, a 6th Dan black belt with over 40 years karate  experience. Jeff competed at a State, National and International level however over the last 20 years has focussed on unravelling the mysteries of kata (forms or patterns) and what karate originally offered in Self-Defence.

Rarely are violent attacks made from a down block position with a stepping straight punch as seen on YouTube to be masterfully dispatched by a whirling karate-ka. We teach our students different methods of striking so they understand what can come at them. Of course we do not promote violence but the kids have fun experimenting and the adults love whacking things.
